The book for those who seek their Roots …

Mining was so important in Bédar, Los Gallardos, Garrucha, Mojácar, Turre and Vera that practically the entire population, directly or indirectly, worked in it.

In addition, many people came from abroad seeking employment in the mines themselves, transportation, or foundries and the shipment of minerals.

So, it is very likely that if you are from the region, you can find your relatives in the almost five hundred photos included in this book and at the same time learn about the lives of these long-suffering workers who sometimes lived long periods in small caves or huts situated close to the work.

Railroad and technology enthusiasts will not be able to stop looking at these pages …

The history of mining in the Axarquía Almeriense is also the history of the railway and overhead cables.

In our region there was an aerial cable between Bédar and Garrucha which at the time was the longest and highest capacity in the world.

Bédar also hosted what was the largest mineral wash plant in the world, and of which only the images that are in this book remain, since today a mass of semi-detached houses now stands on its site.

… Or images of the project for the mineral loading dock on Mojácar beach, carried out by Eiffel’s company and its partners, of which nothing remains.

The reader will find in these pages dozens and dozens of original images of trains, installations, artifacts for the transport of ore, many of whose existence probably was not even know.

For lovers of Industrial and Social history

Civil engineering is exciting, and even more so that of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This work collects an infinity of references, and of course images explained because there is also a social history of strikes, sabotage, robberies, poverty and opulence, of families impoverished by very low wages that, given the job instability, they ended up leaving the land where they were born to emigrate to Argentina, the United States, Algeria, France or Catalonia, where they could prosper and dignify their lives.

The descendants of those emigrants of yesteryear will find in this book, the reason why their ancestors made a decision as tough as leaving the land where they were born.
